Per-User Budgets for Live AI Chat Replies

What tokens costEN

§1 Per-user budgets put a ceiling on chat spending

A per-user budget limits how much your chat product can spend on AI requests for one person during a defined period. For example, a free account might receive $1 of AI usage each month, while a paid account receives $10. These are illustrative allowances, not model prices.

In real-time chat, replies arrive token by token instead of appearing all at once. That makes conversations feel responsive, but it also means spending is happening while the answer is still being written. A reliable budget system checks spending before a reply starts, reserves room for it, and settles the actual cost afterward.

§2 Choose a spending allowance and reset schedule

Start with a money-based allowance rather than a message count. Ten short questions can cost less than one request containing a long document. Tokens are pieces of text processed or generated by a model, and input and output tokens may have different prices.

Define the rules before writing enforcement code:

  • – Set an allowance for each account tier, using expected usage and your available margin.
  • – Choose a daily or monthly reset and specify the time zone used for that reset.
  • – Decide whether unused allowance expires or carries forward.
  • – Keep customer billing separate from the internal AI cost allowance unless your product explicitly connects them.

A monthly allowance can still disappear in an afternoon. A smaller daily cap or a request-rate limit can reduce that risk, especially for free accounts.

§3 Estimate the full request before opening the stream

Every request can include more than the newest message. Conversation history, system instructions, retrieved documents, and tool results can all add input tokens. Estimate that complete input, then add the cost of the maximum output you will permit.

Imagine an account has $0.20 remaining and your conservative estimate for the next request is $0.08. Reserve that $0.08 before contacting the model. If the estimated request will not fit, shorten the permitted output, reduce unnecessary context, or ask the user to wait for their allowance to reset.

Keep model prices in a maintained configuration rather than scattering them throughout application code. If you offer a model such as Claude Haiku 4.5, calculate against its current provider rates and any applicable charges, not an assumed universal token price.

§4 Reserve funds safely across simultaneous chats

Two browser tabs can send messages at the same moment. If both read the same available balance before either updates it, both may spend money that was only available once.

Make the balance check and reservation one atomic database operation. Record a request identifier, the reserved amount, the account, and the request status. Make settlement idempotent, meaning a repeated completion event cannot charge the same request twice.

After completion, replace the reservation with the actual charge and release any unused amount. Keep interrupted or uncertain requests pending until you can reconcile their usage. A timeout alone does not prove that no billable work occurred.

§5 Enforce limits while tokens are arriving

Server-Sent Events, or SSE, is a common way to deliver live replies. Your server should own the upstream request and enforce the allowance; a browser counter is only a display, not a spending control.

Set a supported output-token limit before generation begins. Use available usage information to reconcile costs, and cancel the upstream request when necessary. Disconnecting the browser does not necessarily cancel model generation, so explicitly handle that case.

Cancellation may not stop billing instantly because some work can already be in flight. Conservative reservations and a small safety margin are more dependable than trying to stop at an exact dollar boundary.

§6 Use Fluxio behind your budget checks

Fluxio is a streaming-first, pay-per-token AI API relay that fits this architecture. One key provides access to multiple model providers, and replies arrive token by token. It works with OpenAI-style clients using the API base https://api.fluxioapi.com/v1.

Keep that key on your server and place your own budget checks before relay calls. A shared API key does not replace per-user accounting. Confirm which usage details your chosen route returns, and reconcile your ledger against billed usage.

§7 Explain remaining allowance before users hit zero

Show remaining allowance and the reset date near the chat input. If a request cannot fit, explain the limit before opening an empty reply. Offer a clear next step, such as waiting for the reset or choosing a shorter response.
