Handling 401 and 402 Errors in Streaming Chat

SSE & APIsEN

§1 401 and 402 errors need different recovery paths

A streaming chat client shows an AI reply as small pieces of text arrive, rather than waiting for the complete answer. That makes conversations feel immediate, but it also makes failures more noticeable. A blinking cursor that never becomes a reply leaves users wondering whether to wait, refresh, or send their message again.

Two HTTP status codes deserve clear handling. 401 Unauthorized generally means the API request lacks valid authentication credentials. 402 Payment Required can indicate a billing or credit problem, but its exact meaning depends on the provider. Read the provider’s error details instead of guessing from the number alone.

§2 A 401 error means checking credentials first

Common causes of a 401 include a missing API key, an invalid key, or credentials that have been revoked. In a typical setup, your application’s server adds the provider key before forwarding a request. A mistake there should not become a confusing instruction for every user to sign in again.

Separate your application’s login from its connection to the AI provider. If the user’s own session has expired, ask them to sign in again. If your server’s provider key is invalid, show a temporary service message and alert the application operator. Logging users out will not repair a broken server credential.

  • – Check that the expected authorization header reaches the provider.
  • – Confirm that the server is using the intended key and API endpoint.
  • – Keep secret keys out of browser code, screenshots, and diagnostic logs.

§3 A 402 error needs a billing-aware message

When a provider uses 402 for insufficient credit or another payment restriction, repeating the same request usually will not help. Your client should stop the loading indicator, preserve the message, and explain the next useful action.

The right wording depends on who pays. If users connect their own accounts, you might say, “Your AI account needs billing attention. Check your balance before trying again.” If your application pays centrally, say that the service is temporarily unavailable and notify your team. Do not ask users to add credit to an account they cannot access.

Avoid claiming that every 402 means an empty balance. Use a documented provider error code or a safe, readable explanation to distinguish payment restrictions when that information is available.

§4 Check HTTP errors before reading the token stream

Many streaming APIs deliver replies through server-sent events, or SSE: a connection that carries events as they become available. Before reading those events, check whether the HTTP response succeeded. A failed request may contain an ordinary error response rather than a token stream.

After streaming starts, the HTTP status has already been sent. A later failure may appear as a provider-defined error event or a disconnected connection instead of a new 401 or 402 status. Handle those situations separately, and do not treat an unexpected disconnect as proof of an authentication or billing problem.

§5 Preserve chat messages and avoid retry loops

Keep the user’s original message visible when a request fails. If some answer text has arrived, retain it with a clear label such as “Reply interrupted.” Always stop the typing animation when the request ends, including error paths.

  • – Show an actionable message rather than a raw error payload.
  • – Offer a manual retry after credentials or billing have been corrected.
  • – Prevent repeated clicks from launching duplicate requests and possible extra charges.
  • – Record the status code and available request identifier without storing secrets.

§6 Use Fluxio behind the same recovery rules

Fluxio is a streaming-first, pay-per-token AI API relay that fits clients built around live replies. One key provides access to multiple model families, and OpenAI-style clients use https://api.fluxioapi.com/v1 as the API base. Centralizing access can simplify integration, but your client still needs explicit authentication, billing, and interrupted-stream handling. Test each path before releasing your chat interface.
