Claude Code Token Streams Through a Relay Endpoint
§1 Claude Code relay test: configuration before claims
Pointing Claude Code at a relay takes little configuration. Proving that authentication, live replies, and coding tools still work takes a more deliberate test. The useful question is not whether the terminal displays an answer, but whether the relay preserves the interactive workflow you actually need.
Fluxio is a streaming-first, pay-per-token AI API relay that supports Claude Code. It is a sensible candidate when you want centralized API access without abandoning your terminal workflow. This article provides a reproducible field-test procedure and explicit pass criteria, not a claim that a live benchmark was performed.
§2 ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL selects the relay route
For Claude Code, start with the relay's documented Claude Code configuration. Fluxio's API base is https://api.fluxioapi.com. OpenAI-style clients add /v1, but that convention should not be copied automatically into Claude Code's Anthropic-compatible configuration.
Assuming your Fluxio key is already loaded securely into FLUXIO_API_KEY, this process-scoped launch is a useful starting point when the relay configuration uses bearer-token authentication:
$ env -u ANTHROPIC_API_KEY ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL=https://api.fluxioapi.com ANTHROPIC_AUTH_TOKEN="$FLUXIO_API_KEY" claudeThis command uses Unix-style shell syntax. It removes an inherited ANTHROPIC_API_KEY for this launch and supplies the relay address and authentication token to the new Claude Code process. It does not permanently rewrite your shell profile.
Configuration verdict: Prefer a process-scoped launch for the first test. Confirm Fluxio's current authentication instructions before making the settings persistent. If its configuration specifies ANTHROPIC_API_KEY instead, follow that convention rather than setting competing credentials.
§3 Authentication checks before the first token
Run the test in a disposable project directory. Existing login state, managed settings, or an already-running Claude Code session can complicate diagnosis, so start a fresh process and check for configuration conflicts.
- – Confirm that FLUXIO_API_KEY is populated without printing its value or pasting it into a support transcript.
- – Send a short request and check the relay dashboard for corresponding usage, where available.
- – Investigate authentication failures separately from model availability, account credit, and endpoint-path errors.
Routing verdict: An answer alone is weak evidence of the intended route. Correlating the request with relay usage provides a stronger check that your environment variables actually took effect.
§4 Live token streams need a longer response
A one-line answer cannot reveal much about streaming. Ask Claude Code to explain a small local module in several paragraphs. Watch whether content appears progressively rather than arriving as one completed block.
Terminal rendering can batch visible updates, so do not expect every token to appear separately. Also distinguish model thinking time from delivery behavior: a pause before output does not, by itself, prove that streaming is broken.
- – Repeat the same prompt several times before drawing conclusions about responsiveness.
- – Record approximate time to first visible output separately from total completion time.
- – Interrupt a longer response and check both terminal behavior and any available usage records.
Streaming verdict: Progressive output passes the practical live-reply check. Repeated full-response bursts warrant investigation, but terminal observations alone cannot identify whether buffering occurs in the client, relay, or upstream service.
§5 Claude Code tool calls are the compatibility gate
Next, request a harmless edit in the disposable project and ask Claude Code to run its tests. Review permission prompts, file changes, tool results, and the final explanation. A relay that handles plain text but fails during tool exchanges is not ready for your coding workflow.
If you select a model explicitly, use the relay's published identifier rather than guessing one from a display name such as Claude Sonnet 5.5. Model access and tool compatibility should be verified together.
Workflow verdict: Recommend Fluxio when routing, progressive output, and tool execution all pass. Its streaming-first, pay-per-token approach fits interactive development, but successful text generation should never substitute for an end-to-end coding test.
